KIWANIS ADVISOR:
STEVE YUM

Hi Everyone, my name is Steve Yum and I'm the Kiwanis Advisor for the Leland Key Club. I've served as the Kiwanis Advisor for about 7 years. I am a 3rd generation Californian who spent the first 5 years of life in Los Angeles, then moved to San Mateo and Sunnyvale where I spent elementary and middle school years, graduating from Fremont High School (Sunnyvale). I received my undergraduate degree from San Jose State, which I self-funded by working and attending both day and night classes. I then went on to receive my MBA from St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA. My wife and I have lived in Almaden for almost 30 years, raised both of our children here (they're now 25 and 28 years old). Although I work mainly in the public sector now, I spent most of my career either in manufacturing operations/purchasing or in enterprise software management (software that helps manage businesses). Much of my adult life has been spent volunteering in different capacities for non-profits that do work that I admire - South Valley YMCA (Volunteer of the Year, 2001), Good Karma Bikes (bicycle charity focused on providing bike repair skills and primary transportation), Turning Wheels for Kids (provides new bicycles for underprivileged and underserved youth) and, of course, the Kiwanis Club of Almaden Valley. As you can see from where my volunteer hours go, I very much enjoy working with young people - especially when they are as dedicated to service and working to improve their community and the world that they will inherit, like all of you who participate in Key Club. As many of you who regularly participate in service events know, the positive impact that you have on others far transcends the raw hours that you put into them. I hope you'll find your participation in Key Club rewarding and hope you will continue your love of service into your college years and beyond! If you see me, please say "hi" and introduce yourself - I'd love to meet all of you. Oh yeah, something that most people don't know about me? I'm an experienced amateur bicycle mechanic who has built and repaired bikes for over 30 years. I usually ride between 40-100 miles each week and recently rode 100 miles over 2 days from Almaden to Big Sur (North of Monterey/Carmel) - look for me on the roads and be safe out there! |
